Hey, Willie here! I've a confession to make. I’ve always cringed at the name of my newsletter. “Oh, you can check out my Dividend Titan Email Newsletter…” Crap. It sounded generic, like a product, and not a person writing to you. And I’ve long believed the best newsletters are always written from a personal lens. So from today, this newsletter has a new name: Willie Keng’s Market Memos. I’ve grown this newsletter from 48 readers in 2020 to over 10,000 readers today. As we crossed that mark, I felt it’s the right time to widen the lens. Dividends will always be close to my heart. But I’ll cover markets more broadly from tiny island, Singapore. Let me show you what I’ve been doing. Every morning, my alarm goes off at 5.45am. I pour myself a hot cup of coffee, sometimes grab a few pieces of fruit and walk to my desk. Then work begins. I go through major financial publications, private financial blogs, email newsletters, and companies’ annual reports. My analysts support my research. We pick out the best insights, and I personally put them into a memo you can read in under five minutes. Here’s what you can expect. In my Market Memos, I’ll talk about the biggest trends, stock ideas and income opportunities across the US, Singapore, China and Hong Kong markets… with the occasional look at other emerging markets. Along the way, I hope to share a piece of my personal investing journey with you, how I invest my family’s money and my (very expensive) mistakes so you don't have to make them yourself. After all, helping my mum secure her retirement through investing taught me something important: Building lasting wealth isn't about chasing the hottest stocks. It's about doing good research, making sensible decisions and allowing your money to compound over time. That's what I hope these memos will help you do. You’ll hear from me about three to four times a week. From time to time, I’ll share my Build Your Monster Dividend Portfolio Online Course and my Diligence Wealth Club membership enrollment, if you like to go deeper with me. So if you’re a new reader here... Check out my investing strategy: Click here. If you like to get started investing with my free resources: Click here. And finally, if you believe true wealth is compounded from good old fashioned research… Welcome home. Sometimes, investing can be simple. - Willie Keng, CFA Founder, DividendTitan.com P.S. What else would like me to write about? Reply to this email, I'd love to hear from you! |
Analysts love a bullish call. So when a Citi analyst put a sell call on OCBC two weeks ago, I went: “Finally someone started making sense.” Singapore banks haven’t fallen as much as I’d like. That tells me one thing: The market is treating DBS, OCBC and UOB like a riskless asset class. Even if people don’t say the word “riskless”, the market is buying Singapore banks as though it believes it’s riskless. There’s little margin of error for Singapore banks trading at market highs. Investors have...
The bond market is seeking answers. CoreWeave, a major data centre operator saw its shares hit a 52-week low. Its bonds, which were issued in June with a 9.625% yield, have dropped in price. This pushed its yield to around 15% recently. This means, any investors who are buying CoreWeave’s bonds are demanding a 15% return to compensate for its credit risk. I would say this is a canary in the coal mine for its debt-funded AI expansion. The company continues to burn enormous cash. And this data...
I hated what I was about to do. “Ah, darn it.” I took a deep breath before I hit send. It was 2016 and I was a research analyst in a private bank. The report I wrote on the computer screen was glaring back at me: "Sell call" on Nam Cheong. Nam Cheong was one of the market darlings during the oil & gas boom. It built and chartered oil support vessels for big energy companies back then. Nam Cheong bonds sat in many of the private clients' portfolios. It wasn’t a popular call. Within days, my...
